AUDIOLOGY

  • Screening and test for hearing issues for all people who attend a medical assessment (estimated at 800-1000 people).
  • Evaluation and diagnosis of hearing loss.
  • Preparing, fitting and dispensing of basic hearing aids where applicable.
  • Providing information and advice on hearing issues.
  • Advise medical team regarding hearing issues where necessary.
  • Ability to work in busy environment.

DENTAL ASSISTANT

  • Work in a team with dentists and other dental assistants.
  • Help dentist with clinical procedures, including suction, prepare instruments and materials, extractions, instruct patients on postoperative and general oral health care, fillings, scale and clean.
  • Preform non-clinical procedures such as – sterilize and disinfect instruments and equipment, prepare trays of instruments for dental procedures.
  • Work in a fast pace and busy environment
  • Need to be flexible and have an open mind.
  • Able to be on your feet most of the day.
  • A kind and friendly manner goes a long way in the patients care.
  • Ability to work in potentially hot, humid environment.

DENTIST

  • Mainly perform minor dental procedures and most patients in their mixed dentition such as:
    • Fillings- try to preserve permanent dentition e.g. 6’s
    • Extractions of hopeless/worst teeth. Please do not perform full deciduous clearance.
    • Possible surgical.
    • Scale and clean.
    • Prescribe medications such as antibiotics/pain killer
    • Root canal treatment only under strictly selected cases e.g. anterior in young pt. with good prognosis.
  • Work with Vietnamese interpreters (if necessary, to aid communication).
  • Work with local Vietnamese health professionals.
  • Willingness to be flexible with job roles depending on what is required on the day.
  • Ability to work in potentially hot, humid conditions.

GENERAL PRACTITIONER

  • Conduct one on one patient assessment of children and adults, including history and examination.
  • Provide management plans for patients.
  • Provide education on common medical problems, such as hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, osteoarthritis.
  • Prescribe medications where appropriate.
  • Order simple investigations such a as blood test, ultrasound.
  • Refer suitable patients to physiotherapist, audiologist, optometrist, nurse.
  • Willing to work with interpreters and local Vietnamese health professionals.
  • Willing to work in fast pace environment.
  • Ability to work in potentially hot, humid environment.
  • Flexibility in job role depending on what is required.

INTERPRETER

  • No formal qualification as an interpreter needed.
  • Able to fluently speak in Vietnamese and English.
  • Work with Australian health professionals and other English-speaking volunteers.
  • Act as translator between English speaking volunteers and local Vietnamese patients.
  • Willingness to be flexible with job role depending on what is required on the day.
  • Ability to work potentially hot, humid conditions.

NURSE

  • Work in a team with other nurses and support staff to manage patients, including children and adults.
  • Undertake initial assessment of patients, including weight, height, blood pressure, blood sugar checks.
  • Undertake procedures such as wound dressing, assist with minor surgical procedures, such as abscess drainage or suturing.
  • Provide education on common medical issues, including hypertension, diabetes, dental hygiene.
  • Work in a team with other health professionals, including doctors, physiotherapist, occupational therapist, optometrists.
  • Work with Vietnamese interpreters (when necessary).
  • Ability to be flexible with job roles depending on what is needed on the day.
  • Work in a busy environment.

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST

  • Conduct one on one assessment of patients, including children and adults.
  • Prescribe walking aids to appropriate patients.
  • Demonstrate how to use adaptive equipment that will help patients with daily living where appropriate.
  • Work in conjunction with other health professionals to provide care to patients, including doctors, physiotherapist, nurses.
  • Work with Vietnamese interpreters (if necessary, to aid communication).
  • Work with local Vietnamese health professionals.
  • Willingness to be flexible with job roles depending on what is required on the day.
  • Ability to work in potentially hot, humid conditions.

OPTOMETRIST

  • Provide comprehensive eye examination for primary care and diagnoses of glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, cataract and other eye related diseases.
  • Provide prescriptions to correct vision.
  • Provide low vision and binocular coordination consultation and advises for elderly and paediatric patients with poor vision, strabismus, lazy eyes.
  • Provide treatment and care for red, inflammation and injury eyes with chemical burns and foreign body.
  • Provide treatment and co- management for glaucomatous patients.
  • Provide punctum dilation for treatment of epiphora.
  • Minimum diagnostic tools available. If possible, bring your own direct and indirect ophthalmoscopes and any other tools that may be necessary for your work.
  • Ability to work in busy environment.
  • Ability to work in potentially hot, humid environment.
  • Able to work in a team, including other optometrist, assistants and Vietnamese interpreters.

PHARMACIST

  • Work in a fast pace, often tight workspace environment.
  • Work in a team with other pharmacist and assistants.
  • Dispense using medical software (Zed). This is not essential as Pharmacy Leader can demonstrate how to use the software at the start of the mission.
  • Picking and packing of medications prescribed by doctors, dentists, optometrists.
  • Provide advice on medication to patients (Vietnamese interpreters available if needed)
  • Work in a team and provide advice to other medical professionals, including nurses, doctors, physiotherapists, optometrists.
  • Ability to work in potentially hot, humid environment.

PHYSIOTHERAPIST

  • Conduct one on one patient assessments on children and adults.
  • Develop individual treatment plans.
  • Demonstrate exercises that can help improve symptoms and function.
  • Ability to assess and effectively treat, with manual therapy, education and exercises, for musculoskeletal conditions.
  • Ability to improvise with equipment as there is minimal physiotherapy tools. Please bring exercise sheets / theraband / tools that will be useful.
  • Provide hands on physical therapy for patients when appropriate.
  • Assess for suitability of mobility aids, such as walking sticks, to improve function. Hopefully will have an occupational therapist on the trip to help with this role.
  • Work in a team with other health professionals, including doctors and nurses.
  • Work with Vietnamese interpreter, if necessary.

SUPPORT STAFF
